Today, my 4-year-old son discovered that he really likes masturbating. So much in fact, that he took pictures of it with my phone. FML

So despite what a few people have said, childhood masturbation is apparently not all that uncommon. Not all kids do it but apparently a surprisingly high number do. They don't necessarily realise it's "sexual", just that it feels good. Speak with you child's doctor if you are worried. Then speak with your child about boundaries and privacy. Humans are complex creatures and that includes our young. There is no point in pretending all kids are innocent snowflakes who don't touch themselves.

While it is bad that he used your phone for it, it is natural to be curious about your body. I'd try to teach him about it in a kid friendly way (birds and bees) something to satisfy his curiosity. I'd also warn him about using cellular devices for that purpose. He's young so there's still time to remediate.

Show it anyway

Babies are known to get erections even in the womb. It's a natural body process, especially since the penis is full of nerves.

It's not uncommon for babies to be born erect.

Little kids can get erections. You just don't ejaculate until puberty.

What goes through my mind now is how he knows what masturbating is and how he came up with the idea of doing it, as normally a four year old isn't sexually active.

Doesn't take a genius to know what masturbation is. Usually it interchanges with playing with oneself

Children, EVEN BABIES/TODDLERS, explore their bodies. He doesn't know what he's doing and it isn't bad for him to it. It feels good, and that's all he knows. Parents have to teach them it has to be a private event though. ALL little boys do it.

For young children it can be a way to deal with anxiety. Just putting the info out there :)

This can be a sign of poor hygiene- or irritation- in that area, in addition to the reasons other people have given.

Speak to his doctor. There are many explanations this could have, some natural and others not. Maybe I just watch too much SVU but the fact that he is doing that plus taking a photo is worrisome and I hope it is just him exploring.
