Today, I printed out a worksheet that detailed instructions for my students to write a letter from the perspective of a Chinese immigrant in 1870 as part of their history homework. Half my class decided to Google Translate their assignment into traditional Chinese. FML

Now I can see why teachers are always cranky.

Use google translate to translate it back to English, and use the crap that you get back to grade

I'm fairly certain they printed it out to turn in for homework.

Why? It's more common to send it in digitally

Have the students email their papers and you can backtranslate them with google too, and then fail them for trying to make you believe an 1870s Chinese immigrant would say something like "Today, I spent 16 hours a rail swing pick a mile. Sex my life."

And if that wasn't part of the assignment, they get a 0 because you can't grade it.

That's extra effort. Chinese isn't easy to write

It is most likely type written and printed out.

Given google translate isn't the best tool you could mark them down for grammar if you know someone that speak and writes fluent Chines.

Easy fix. Have them turn it in online and then go and I translate it yourself

There is a pic on the web that shows a student doing this exact thing. Check to see if they all just copied that: all of their assignments are probably the same. And then fail them for plagiarism!!! (This is coming from a HS teacher-cheers, and GL!)

You sound like that no-fun teacher that everyone hates and talks shit about.
