Today, I finally opened up to my therapist about how I used to torture wild rabbits when I was a kid because my dad used to beat me. She called me a monster, kicked me out of her office, and told me I was banned from her practice. FML.

I was going to make a joke, but I realized it would be in very poor taste, so instead have this information about your rights as a patient. What's with all the posts with therapists being shit at their job the last week? I'm seriously wondering if any of these therapists that people are seeing actually have a license to practice and a degree in what their field supposedly is. Working in any medical field means that you take up the Hippocratic Oath, and her reaction wouldn't just damage the integrity of hers, but shatter it. "Above all else, DO NO HARM." Calling someone a monster for something that they obviously want a medical opinion on, and abandoning their care definitely counts as harm! I would report her to the license board, if she does have a license. If she doesn't, she would be considered to have been practicing medicine without a license. In either scenario, unless she gave you formal- as in typed out in formal letter format- notice of discharge, she can't just ban you from the practice. Even if she DID give you such a letter, laws state that the patient is entitled to reasonable notice of discharge, and the medical practitioner is legally required to continue care during that time. Failure to do any of those means that the doctor has committed patient abandonment, which is a BIG problem for said medical professional, and grounds for not just a lawsuit, but criminal charges if you can prove their was harm caused by said abandonment. (For the record, "reasonable notice" requires a minimum of 30 days, unless otherwise specified by local laws.)

Hey, I am so sorry you have experienced this. You should be proud of yourself for trying to get help. please know that you should never have experienced this and when you go to another therapist you will find that they are not like that other one. Or at least they really should not be.

Though I agree with what you said, I know for a fact health mental workers, including therapists, do not take the Hippocratic Oath.

And you lost when you mentioned doctor. A licensed therapist does not need to have a PhD to have their own practice. Most do, but not all. The therapist could have a Masters and LPC.

I've slept maybe 14 hours in the last seven days, so the fact that it was largely coherent is something I'm still going to count as a win. Thank you for pointing out that they don't have to take the Hippocratic Oath, particularly since several of my mental health professionals have referenced having taken it in the past. That said, the therapist's behavior IS 100% a violation of the ethics tied to any medical field, as well as least a few written and enforced rules on conduct. The doctor one was a genuine slip up. All the therapists I've personally gone to have been doctors, so I tend to assume therapists are doctors, which isn't the best thing to do. Thank you for pointing it out, as I've been trying to change that habit.

That's extremely unprofessional AND hurtful!!! There's far better ones out there, but alas - like for me - it takes effort/ research/ even interviewing to find a good one. Look for those that specialize in child abuse & family issues. Hang in there, OP! :-)
