Today, my mother-in-law dropped by and huffily started cleaning my apartment since I "can't be bothered" to do it. I just got home from the hospital after having foot surgery. I can barely walk. FML

Seriously, write her a little Thank You card expressing your appreciating for her assistance while you were recovering. You can feel (a little) happily snarky, but still point out WHY your house was in that condition (even if it kinda was none of her business). Odds are it will earn you brownie points with your MIL for writing a (not necessarily sincere) thank you .

Seems like your husband has been complaining to his mother about your lack of "wifely" duties because how else would she know that your house was dirty...if it was? Talk to her about staying the hell out of your house and your husband about doing some housework.

So? On the one hand there was time to get your apartment ready before surgery, on the other hand you two might just have a different definition of clean, which means that this would have even happened without the surgery.

"Ow! I just dropped this heavy object on my foot, and I need emergency surgery! Oh wait, let me tidy up first." Alternatively, if the foot was damaged but didn't need IMMEDIATE surgery, "I'm glad I'm getting that surgery for my foot pains tomorrow, and the doctor said the best thing to do is relax and not put any weight on it. Oh, I know! I'll clean the house while I wait!"

I have an image In my head of you angrily hobbling after her and knocking over things with a laugh track playing in the background.

Well, you could always write a nice note thanking her for cleaning your house while you were recovering from FOOT SURGERY and could BARELY WALK. That said, why isn't your spouse taking care of things while you're laid up?
