Don't work for free. It's 100% illegal and could get the business fined or shut down. If you're working for free and have an accident at work, the owners insurance won't pay for an injury and it'll be on you (or the owner themself) to pay for the medical bills. It also screws over anyone the owner is paying because they could have worked those hours for pay instead and actually had money. Working for free is screwing everyone, especially yourself.

If the boss knew about it, he/she could get fired for it. If you did it yourself, without approval, then you can get fired for it. Lose-Lose.

If the boss DIDN"T know, they can get fired/fined for it. Really, there're only two legal/moral ways to work off the clock: One, work for yourself. If you're self-employed you don't have to track your hours for payroll and can work for as long as you want/need too. Two, volunteer somewhere. It's a volunteer thing, they don't have to follow all of the labor laws.

You shouldn’t work for free but I understand it’s frustrating to be called “untrustworthy” for donating your time to better their store. Owners can be dicks sometimes.

It's not legal. You cannot "volunteer" in a for-profit business and the owner would have been on the hook. I'm guessing you're pretty young but even if you're not, your reaction to this isn't great. Check out the site Ask A Manager sometime, it's a really good resource for... well, anyone that will ever work.
