No, the guy behind you was just being a complete dick.
Once, when I was in a crabby mood, I said, "No, I give to my own charities, and I'll call your manager and see if he'll give to MY favorite charity." F these ash pole systems that put the poor cashier and customer on the spot. And another thing, does it go to "Hungry Children" or is it another goddamn fraud? There already exist food shelves, Churches, and SNAP it the parent would lift a finger.

I never give to those things. I have zero trust that those places really give the total amount they raised to said charities or not and most stores will not allow independent auditing of amounts raised. If I want to donate, I’ll donate myself, not through a store
You're absolutely right not to do it that way. Very often the companies then get a tax break by donating this money as if they are giving up their own cash to charity.
