I have been to both places and I found Taiwan to be a much more pleasant country. Give your ancestors a pat on the back, they did the right thing by leaving.
It's funny how quickly people can turn from sympathetic to assholes. In WW2 the japanese invaded china and treated them like shit, made fun of them, called them sick man of asia(bruce lee film remember?).
