Today, I witnessed a robbery as a teenager ran out of a Walgreens with stolen goods in his hands. The manager was running after him. Trying to be helpful, I pulled forward to block the thief from getting away. The cops showed up and arrested me for hitting a pedestrian. FML

Your intention was good just not very well thought out. (PS does anyone think the manager would have said something? If he was chasing the kid, he would have seen OP right?)

I understand where the police are coming from, you can't really use your car to stop someone. Especially when they are only a teenager and by the sounds of it weren't armed. Also if you had caused the teenager a serious injury sorry to say but they would more than likely have sued you for a lot and very high chance they would have won. Next time if you really want to help just take a picture or video so that maybe it will help ID him and make a case against him stronger.

The other issue I have with this is the manager was chasing the thief, another thing that isn't exactly legal. You're always told in retail to not engage the robber and be compliant.

97 - The kid was a shoplifter, not an armed robber.

Aw, what happened to the good Samuratan Law that protects you from this kind of bullshit?

Pretty sure that only covers people giving CPR or assisting someone who is injured so they don't get sued for that. Stopping an unarmed teenager from shoplifting doesn't really fit that bill.

To 33- Actually if you read it the FML OP never actually states they hit the guy they just got arrested for hitting a pedestrian so the guy could have just ran into the car when it was blocking the way, which mind you still counts as hitting a pedestrian because you willfully moved your car into the pedestrains way knowing full well they would hit you. Maybe you should read it again especially since no where in the FML does it say accidently.

The cops always get pissy when you do their job better than them. That's why they're always trying to arrest Batman and Spider-Man.

llama612: I read it fine, thanks. I said accidentally because OP did it without the intention of hitting the thief, correct? Their INTENTION was to block the way of the thief, which IS stated in the FML. If it was UNINTENTIONAL but it still happened, then it was ACCIDENTAL. Maybe you should go back to English class before you try to argue semantics.

That's what you get for trying to be a hero and doing the police's job!

By the way, I'm not saying OP should've played the hero, I'm just saying that he didn't do it on purpose.

I actually happen to work at a Walgreens. When they train you they tell you, the normal employee to NOT go after the thief and only let the managers do it because they could have a weapon on hand and you could get hurt and the company would be liable. So therefore YDI.

See kids, this is why you don't comment after working a 9.5 hour shift. Your brain is too tired to comprehend everything. If a mod sees this, please delete this and my original comment. Thank you Alan.

To maninthemachine He INTENTIONALLY blocked the thief so by INTENTIONALLY blocking the thief he forced the thief to run into his car which doesn't make it an accident. I read it fine thanks :)
