Today, I rode my bike to the grocery store. I left my bike on the small bike rack they have outside the door. When I came out 5 minutes later I found someone had tied their enormous, growling German Shepard to the same rack. I had to wait for the owner to come out who then laughed at me. FML

I hate dog owners like this. I'm in the delivery business and must encounter some pretty savage mutts all the time, with owners who look like they'd like to see their dog attack me.

There are alot of stupid *****. Sry you met one.

I would've called animal control, and had the dog taken from the owner before they came back. Hey, neglect is neglect.

As a dog owner (big dog), I can say the following: - Never touch a dog before asking it's owner if it's ok first. Even a puppy. First you don't know the dog, it could be aggressive when touched by strangers, and second dog owners don't like their dogs to be extra-friendly with strangers. A lot of people would try to pet my dog when she was a puppy, and I did not like it because I did not want her to trust strangers too much. I'm not saying I wanted her to be aggressive, but I just didn't want her to jump on people to play (people don't like it and get scared), and I don't want her to follow a stranger and get kidnapped. I also want her to bark if someone breaks into the house, not play with them. - Some people are excessively afraid of dogs and don't know how to behave towards them. For example, some people may just run, which wakes up the hunter instinct in the dog: runners remind dogs of prey, and dogs suddenly feel the need to chase after the runner (not to bite him, just to chase him... for fun.). I also had joggers running past me from behind while walking my dog. I'm usually extra cautious to keep my dog away from people, I usually shorten the leash or walk to the other side of the road. But joggers run beside dogs without caring, and when they come to you from behind they won't even alert you in any kind of way of their presence. Several times I had joggers popping up behind me out of nowhere, and my dog would have the reflex of jumping on them. I always stopped her on time (and she wouldn't bite, just wants to play) but the joggers had a good scare... Plain stupidity on the jogger's part, but so long as they don't complain to me I don't care (and I apologize every time anyway, though I think they're 100% responsible). - Animals don't have god damn feelings the way humans do. So many people expect a "human" reaction from dogs, which is a HUGE mistake. The fact is that consciousness (being aware of one's own existence, and experiencing feelings and emotions) is a complex thing. Few animals are conscious. Psychiatrists argue that babies are born with no consciousness but acquire it around 18 months from contact and interaction with their parents. It's likely that domesticated dogs may have some for of consciousness, but if that's the case their consciousness is not as advanced as ours. Instinct is what dictates the behavior of animals (exceptions apart), so keep that in mind when interacting with them. There was once a woman who stared at my dog with a huge smile on her face... My dog got nervous and barked at her, and the lady got scared and told me "you're dog is crazy, I'm just smiling at her, doesn't she see I'm friendly?" - NO, she doesn't, you idiot! She's not a human being, smiling does not have the same meaning to her than it has for us! So there are some basic rules that are easy to learn about dogs in order to stay safe. Here's a quick summary (there are more, I'm just writing down a few). - Don't run near a dog. If it's attacking or threatening you, walk slowly away while facing him (don't turn your back). - Don't look at a dog in the eyes unless it starts interacting with you. If you make eye contact, it could feel threatened. But if starts interacting with you somehow, it's ok. - Don't play or touch a dog you don't know (or an item belonging to such a dog, such as a ball), unless if the dog starts playing with you. If you really want to touch it, ask it's owner first. - Don't show your fear about dogs when you are near a dog. They can read the signs that show you are afraid, and they may perceive it as a threat. Try showing the owner that you are afraid of their dog, this way they can do something about it. Personally if I see someone is afraid of my dog, I either cross. the street or make the leash extra short. Most dog owners are friendly and considerate people, though a few are complete jerks. And don't forget, dogs have a right to be on the street as much as you or anyone else. Owners must me cautious with their dogs, but everyone should also learn how to behave. I've seen some people who had very bad reactions around dogs, and then complained about the way the dog reacted. They may have as well walked into a bank with a gun in their hand, only to complain afterward that they had been wrongfully arrested because they were not intending to cause any harm. And if you don't want dogs on the streets, make your city open parks for them! In my city there are plenty of golf fields, but only a handful of parks where people can let their dogs loose. Anyone can drive 1 minutes and go play golf, but to let your dog run freely in an open space you need to drive up to one hour. I don't mind when it's an area or neigborhood that isn't set for dog owners, but a whole city where dogs aren't welcome? Seriously... Not to mention that they send cops hiding in the parks to see who let's their dog loose, even when there's nobody else 1 mile around, as if dogs were the biggest threat people face. And fines are 150$. It kind of makes me laugh that they reserve so much space for a few people who play golf (a golf field keeps a lot of space for only a few people to enjoy), but they won't make sure dogs have a place to walk, play and exercise. You want more aggressive dogs, just force people to keep them in their backyards 24/7.
