Planned obsolescence

Today, I took my computer to a store to be hopefully repaired due to a messed up screen (due to a part suddenly having stopped working). it is repairable, yet my family still probably wants me to get a new one, despite how sentimental this computer is to me. Why can't they just let it be repaired? FML

hello this is my fml i just made a account, sadly it isnt fixable but otherwise i would try to pay for the repairs, i did pay for it to get checked though i have a few other sentimental items but im genuinely sad about my computer, and i dont think they realized how special this is to me until i cried when i heard that its not repairable

There is economics and there is emotion value. I assume your parents are going by economics. A repaired older device is still an older device and depending on how reliable and capable that design was, it might be near the end of its life - Sooner or later needing replacement anyway… And then there is emotional value. I get it - I like antique radios. And one that ties in with my family history is special… Here is a suggestion - Offer to pay for the repair yourself or in chores if you don’t have a job. They would likely agree to this. But also remember that things are still things and not people - They are replaceable. You will go through many possessions in your life - Some will be special to you. Honor those but don’t be a slave to them.

You can get a new computer and still keep the "Sentimental" computer. Unless you're afraid of hurting the feelings of the old computer.

i can and i may have to now sadly, but even if i will be keeping my now unusable computer another one just feels different, mine felt a specific way while using it and it ran so well and wasnt modern which i prefer, like i hate the copilot button on every recent computer i see that computer felt really special to me is the thing

Look up Linus tech tips, and some other channels online you might be able to fix it yourself and if it’s old enough, you can get the parts on eBay and install it yourself many times you can get the entire display assembly housing and replace it just at the hinges and just be careful how you route the cables, but it’s not that difficult. Watch the videos a couple times until you understand how it’s done and if not, look it up or ask a friend I’m sure they’d be willing to help you if they know something about computers. thank you for the advice, but i have no tech experience or any irl friends, and not even my family knows how to fix this its been deemed unrepairable by best buy but i was too sad to find out why last night, i would gladly repair it myself if i could though edit: by the way i dont do well with video tutorials if you were wondering

Maybe somebody on craigslist could. That’s how I started my business initially and I still see some people do that. I’m going to guess whatever is going on with your computer is not your display is probably the motherboard but even that is replaceable. Also, Best Buy is basically using idiots to repair your laptop. They refused to hire anybody that is actually certified, including comp Tia A+ certified and just using random people. Honestly, I trust smaller Tech shop some places that fix cell phones also work on computers and they may be able to help you especially a lot cheaper rate. I wouldn’t even trust Best Buy to sell me a computer.

didnt know that about best buy, i dont know the full reason its not repairable yet because im still sad about my computer but i think part of if not the whole reason was that its "too old", it is from christmas 2020 but i still love it. and no, i dont think the motherboard is the issue, the display is the only thing thats not working (some part went out in it or something i dont know, its like tinted pink and it worsens temporarily if i do anything). once i find the full reason ill probably tell you guys since you might know some stuff lol

by the way i kind of trusted best buy due to how they actually managed to get it working when a major overheating incident basically made the computer not function like a year after i got it, its still affected by it a little but it did start working again it works by the way, its just that the screen is the issue

ok guys, the reason turns out to be that not only is the screen broken but the motherboard would need repairs due to a previous overheating incident (sorry for saying youre wrong tiptopp), and they dont have the parts to fix it due to how old of a model it is..i dont have any computer repair experience if i need to do something complex with my computer i often look up how. i wont be getting rid of this computer but i assume by this explanation when i said repairing the screen is my only priority, the motherboard probably actually needed repairs but it cant be repaired. this is sad..
