The Dilbert Principle
Today, my boss called me into his office. I've been working hard doing extra work so I can get promoted. He called me in to tell me I'm to reliable in my current position, so I won't be moving up. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, after putting in 110% at my shitty job for two years straight, my boss told me point-blank I'm too good in my current position for him to ever be able to justify promoting me. FML
Today, my boss was fired by the board. A few days ago, he dropped several strong hints that he was going to promote me soon. FML
Today, I did my work, the work of my co-worker who called in sick and the work of my boss who has no idea what the hell is going on all at the same time. I didn't get a promotion because I don't work hard enough. FML
Today, after three weeks of my boss telling me how much he appreciates my hard work and has submitted my name up for a promotion, he called me into his office to announce I'm being laid off. FML
Today, I worked a long shift at my job while feeling like crap, anticipating getting a promotion. As my boss was leaving work, he informed me that because I also go to college, the promotion was being given to another employee that I trained a month ago. This is the second time this has happened. FML
Today, my boss got a promotion and I got laid off. FML
Today, I found out that a co-worker of mine that I had originally hired, trained, and mentored to work in my department for the past 4 years had just got the promotion that I had applied for. He is now my boss. FML
Today, after interviewing for a promotion to a position that was created with me in mind, I eagerly accepted a call from my boss, expecting good news. Turns out, they found a better applicant, who they don't believe will need support from the position I currently hold, so it's being eliminated. FML
Today, I was demoted at work to a much harder and more time-consuming position because, I quote, "You have more experience." My boss is now telling the others I volunteered to be moved to the lower position. FML
Today, my boss made up a rumor that I was quitting my job so I wouldn't get the promotion that was coming up. There goes that raise I've been wanting for six months. FML
Feel like sharing it with the other FML users?
Thanks, your FML was submitted, and will appear in the moderation queue soon!

Silly boy! To get up to management, you need to slack off, produce crappy work and hang out in the break room gossiping. Working "extra hard?" Pshaw! That'll just get you doomed to be an eternal worker bee/cube monkey!

Perhaps converse with him (If you're congenial) that you feel as though its talent that could be used more appropriately in a different range of tasks as well? Don't sell yourself short! Maybe this is when you start job-shopping again!

I fell into this trap. I was so good at my role (and the extra work) that ads for the position I had still (5yrs later) ask for all the skills I had at the time because none of the remaining employees are prepared to do it. I was in a really strong position to negotiate a raise/promotion but due to the size of the business both were extremely unlikely to happen so I found a company elsewhere that could make use of what I was offering for what we both agreed was suitable remuneration :-)
