Definitely illegal in the UK, and I would be very surprised if it were not so in the US. I live in the Channel Islands which has incredibly archaic employment law and is massively in favour of the employer, but this is still illegal over here. Take legal advice on it, you'd probably have a good shot at winning your full paycheque for the period up until they offered you the new job plus damages.
They're a bunch of douches. Slimebags. I don't know if Tennessee is a "hire at will" state. Here in Maryland, which is "hire at will," it's legal. That doesn't make it ethical.
wouldn't that be a bit illegal? firing you just to pay you less? it is kinda indirect but still.
Take your job back, just work half as much and see what you can get away with.
