Today, our electricity has been out for several hours. Now the freezer full of newly purchased food that was supposed to last us for two months is ruined and we don't have the money to replace it all. FML

If the food is in the freezer, and the freezer remains closed the food will be good for a day or so.

Food banks are helpful places. They won't give enough to replace everything, but they'll give you enough for roughly a month. If you're a church goer, as your churches leader if they'll help arrange a food drive or something similar.

I think that wasn't the case because the freezer wasn't down to the usual temperature yet, so it warmed up faster than usual. It can take a while for freezers to drop back below freezing of you buy a bunch of food at once.
