Today, I worked from home to actually be able to concentrate and make a presentation about my project. My boss then sends me a long email about how he wants us to work in the office, and how important it is for team building, giving me feelings of guilt for actually getting some work done. FML

I understand his issue with it, but maybe if you explained the situation to your boss he wouldn't mind you working from home on occasion. Either way, good luck with your presentation, OP.

Thanks for a lot the supportive and constructive replies! This was actually the first time I worked from home since August. He is a controllfreak in a way and that is why I got so annoyed. Next time I double check with him.../PhD student

Just once in my life I wish "Bankruptcy" would happen the way I pictured it as a kid. I would walk past one of the 6 banks in my town and all of a sudden money would start spewing out from the roof like a volcano.

Oh good lord...I know that all too well. My boss does not like homeoffice and after some team members felt excluded we now even have to keep the doors to the neighbouring offices open unless we have a meeting in there! My coworker next door speaks at 65-70 db regularly (yeah, we measured it), people are constantly walking through our office to get into the next office (even though we have a perfectly fine hallway which would just mean a 2m detour. I have now taken to come to work at ungodly times, usually starting at around 11 am and working till late night when everybody left. Looking for a new job as well, that's just insane...good luck to get out as well, OP.

What is it about the workplace that's distracting you? Throw some headphones on to discourage conversations, keep your eyes on your work and don't be sociable during working hours. You can learn to work productively in the middle of a hurricane if you figure out how to do it.

Your boss is mistaken by sending such an email, in any case. Email is for basic communication. Such a communication as his, whether or not he is correct, should be done in person if possible and by phone if not. Email is inappropriate for reprimands, especially, and even congratulations or thanks should be in person but possibly followed up by email. That's beside the point though, since he seems to be a micromanager at heart.

I really don't agree with that. Email is not just for basic communication. We aren't living in the 90's anymore... This sounds like it was a department mail, not just for op alone. If that's the case, an email is fine for that. And yes, a reprimand might be done better in person, but the great advantage of using email is the fact you have written evidence of it. And this doesn't sound like it was big enough for a reprimand anyway, it was just an informational. Anything said in person or over the phone can always be denied later. Which is why I ALWAYS ask for an email confirmation of any important conversation I had, just so I can store it for possible later use.

Sorry OP, but in the end he's your boss so you have to go what he says. Maybe look for a way to make the office less distracting.
