Today, I thought it would be a smart idea to walk out on the pier while the waves were 6 feet tall. I was having fun getting "splashed" by the waves crashing over until one wave knocked me over and dragged me 20 feet across the hard concrete pier. FML

"Today, I thought it would be a smart idea to walk out on the pier while the waves were 6 feet tall." See, I don't even need to read the rest before giving you a YDI.

OP: I'm from Michigan; I live in a town on Lake Michigan which has a pier. You are an IDIOT! You completely deserved this and if you had drowned it would've been natural selection!

why are the piers in Michigan so short? here in California a wave would never reach the top of the pier. Michigan is cheap

Because Michigan is on a lake, California is on the ocean. In lakes waves can't get *that* big (I'm thinking 10 feet at the most in a storm, unless it's a very severe storm). In the ocean, waves can be massive, which calls for bigger piers.

Have you seen the Michigan economy? It's based on making those cars the government has to pay you to take! Piers? Michigan is lucky that it can afford lakes. Or air.

... smarty the waves do get big here... they were 5-10 yesterday on the lake... it is not like is a small lake.. read up a bit.. maybe look for the pic on woodtv.com on the wave height.. not sure if it is still on there

I used to live in Michigan. The pier we have is not meant for people to walk on, it was meant to serve as a breakwater for the channel. They have signs all over the place warning about going out on it when the waves are high. They'll allow it, the same as they'd allow people to swim if there's an undertow warning. It serves it purpose just fine, as long as people aren't dumb enough to walk out on it in inclimate weather.

#30, I live in Michigan, and in west Michigan the economy is just fine, it's Detroit and the eastern side that are in trouble. Besides, the great lakes is making us money anyways, with all the water you waste. OP, that truly sucks. But people are assuming it's on the great lakes, but who says that a Michigander can't go to the ocean? It's never to late to take a fine vacation. When I was in Mexico, the police wouldn't allow us to go scuba diving, and they stood on guard on the pier. Since it was a stormy, cloudy day out, a collossal wave rushed in and swept 'em off their feet. Five minutes after that, they were acting all cool again.

You must live in a box if you think the West Michigan economy is fine. Have you checked the job or housing markets? No jobs and lots of foreclosures.

"I thought it might be a smart idea..." You might want to ease off on that "thinking" business, and leave it to people who do it better than you, i.e., >95% of the human race. Get good at taking orders from others and learn to smile gratefully when you receive your commands. Good girl! Good girl!

never take your eyes off of the ocean. rouge waves exist.

You idiot! What did you think would happen when you let large waves hit you? Only recently 2 tourists were killed on a pier in Kos, Greece when large waves sucked them off the dock. People don't appreciate the true strength of water. Just be glad that you were only dragged across the cement, not under a boat.

indeed, few people realise its strength.. I see it daily now I work as a lifeguard, the current can be quite overwhelming

there have been several rescued by this peir this year.. and a couple killed by it from the undertow...

I'm pretty sure I saw this happen to the kid... nice job!

Omg. I would say sucks to be you, but the simple fact is, that's one of the most idiotic things I can think of! You are very lucky you didn't drown. Next time, how about standing away from the waves if you want to watch them. That was basically a failed deathwish.

well the OP coulda been 6ft 5 or somthing. then it'd be fun!
