Try adopting a cat instead of tricking a stray.

The cat may have been feral and if it was it takes much longer to gather their trust than a regular stray. Also you were trying to gather their trust so you trap them?? You might just want to adopt a cat from the shelter now. YDI

If I've learned anything from Pokémon, catching stray and wild animals is totally normal. If you catch that cat you can have it fight my dog and I'll take all your money.

Not the best decision on a lot of levels. Chances are you were feeding a feral cat, not just a stray. They take longer to get used to human contact- if they ever do. They usually don't have some of the behaviors and knowledge that cats that were raised by parents who know humans do. Better to adopt a cat from the shelter that isn't feral, and just leave food for your feral friend outside- if they even visit anymore.
