I don't know how big your house is, but you might not need to use a baby monitor except for during the night, when you and the baby are sleeping. Just keep the door slightly ajar, and the baby will (most likely) get used to sleeping with background noise while the family is up and around. That'll just make it easier to put him/her to bed and not wake up from the slightest sound. I had a similar problem with my baby monitor, and I decided to just keep it off except at night, in which case the echo is minimal because there's not as much activity. I guess it all depends on how hard it is for you to hear your baby cry, but honestly if your baby needs you he WILL cry louder for you to come get him/her.
