If you don't have the confidence to tell the truth (although small children will not judge you for akne, or any condition or aspect of your appearance, they are not biased yet), at least make up some awesome story, like you fell asleep on a nest of fire ants and we're sleeping so soundly that you didn't wake up from the bites or something.
This is one of the reasons I shouldn't be allowed near small children. I probably would have told them, "No, this happens when you grow up. You'll look like this one day. Enjoy your freedom from this while you can." Wijld teach them to be more careful about what they ask strangers, if nothing else.
