I've given this advice like 4 times now in the span of a week - Long time crushes are always a recipe for disaster because you build yourself up to have feelings for somebody who never has the chance to build up the same mutual feelings. Never get to a point where somebody is a long time crush, you need to take action right away, REGARDLESS of gender. That when if you're turned down you have no time invested to feel bad.
