Wow. People are pathetic. Op, you are in the right, and should not feel ashamed for politely declining some RANDOM STRANGER asking you for you number. Seems like you dogded a bullet with that stranger if they decided to act like that. I hope you told all the idiots giving you accusing stares to shove off, and ollied the **** out of there.
