This sucks for the OP, but there must have been some signs somewhere along the line. I've noticed guys that tend to make a lot of jokes putting women down aren't really joking and believe it. Had a friend that did that in high school he made racist jokes, but thought we thought he was just doing it to be a dick. Ended up he actually was a racist and everyone stopped hanging out with him once they found out. If someone jokes about something enough, chances are they are actually that screwed up.
