Whenever I try to avoid bad luck it comes after me.
Cool. You're awesome, just saying.
See what believing in nonsense gets you? But maybe if you rode under the ladder it would've collapsed on you leaving a tangled mess of metal and limbs as you careened uncontrollably into that same car.
-____- Really? You honestly thought the chanse of something bad happening would be bigger if you went under a ladder than if you just cassualy swerved into the traffic? Superstition... I'll never understand it.
A real cyclist wouldn't have to swerve into the street, he'd already be there. Are you one of those folks that uses the bottom gear and pedals really fast with no resistance to go about 5 MPH? I see those folks and laugh. I use the high gears and actually put effort into riding, when I ride a bicycle, and I get going a decent enough speed that I have to use the road to avoid accidents with pedestrians. At that speed, cars have plenty of time to see you. I've actually put enough stress on a bike to break spokes (on one of those cheap faux Huffys they sell at ShopKo) from nothing more than the sheer force of starting to go. That sucked because I had to take it to get it repaired before I could ride home. tl;dr: YDI for using a bike as if it was a Segway.
Doesn't seem like such a good idea anyway. Better to brave the thought of bad luck than to swerve onto a road where you have a high chance of being hit. Hope you weren't hurt too badly!

Oh, the irony
Sounds like it worked perfectly.
