If you aren't an active person, jumping into an intense activity is almost always going to do more harm than good. That said you should employ other forms of therapy like heat/cold, compression, elevation, and, yes, light activity aimed at the area. Also bring up trigger point injections with your doctor if this is an ongoing issue.
I tend to not run because I have asthma, but I am an avid hiker. My butt wasn't happy. :(
