And who says chivalry and romance are dead?
He sounds like a real winner...
That's when you buy yourself a cheap plastic ring and then tell everyone your boyfriend bought you a piece of crap fake ring.
You know, if he didn't want you tell people that he bought it, there'd be nothing wrong with it.
Do us all a favor, OP. Run—don't walk—away from this character. Do it now.
I don't blame him. When I got with my chick and got her a ring that shit got exchanged 3-4 times before I just said **** it you either wear the one I bought you originally or don't wear one at all.
You deserve better!
I really don't see a problem with him not wanting to spend thousands of dollars on a ring you'll wear for a few months until the wedding and you get an even MORE expensive ring. You love someone? The ring shouldn't matter.
true - but to say they should pay for it and basically pretend he proposed is harsh. I totally think the engagement ring is a bit pointless because you are right - you don't necessarily wear it long (some people wear it with their wedding ring though) and I think thousands of dollars is a stupid amount of money - it is the symbolism that counts as you say.
@BananaaBread: Social pressure. People will think he's an asshole if he doesn't get some super expensive giant diamond ring. People are shallow. They'll think he doesn't care if she doesn't have the most beautiful ring. Just to be clear i'm not against wedding rings. If I get married i'm going to get a ring. Gold with a reasonably sized diamond. It wont have like 50 diamonds around it and a giant one in the middle. But i'd prefer just a plain gold ring. Diamonds are meh. I like simplicity. Not a very extravagant guy.

tell him you're ready to commit to have kids with him, only if he goes and ***** himself
Taking credit for you spending thousands of dollars? Wow how ******* sweet of him.
