He is hoping that you won’t like it so you will give it back to him to return and get you something else(which doesn’t cost as much) and he will keep it for himself since he really wanted it. It’s the same thing my kids do to each other every so often.

Yup. He bought that shit for himself, 100%. Dump this man and let him find someone who actually likes GOT. You can then move on to someone who will get you proper birthday gifts if that's something you like.

Get the sword and give it to someone who wants it, but not your boyfriend. Or sell it without telling him for a few bucks. And then tell him.
Possible he just really likes game of thrones and thought getting you the sword would peak your interest. Not everything people do is selfish...
