Today, I got to work and saw a new desk had been setup on stilts. "Oh, who got the standing desk?" I asked. Turns out it's for the guy in the wheelchair who was right behind me. It needs to be high so the controls of his wheelchair can fit under the desk. FML

Today, our company not only installed standing desks, they have literally just spent a week replacing all our toilets, they are bizarre as hell with a seat that angles downwards. I looked them up online, they’re designed to cause pain in your legs to stop you sitting there too long. FML

Today, my boss scheduled a staff breakfast at a swanky new restaurant for all the hard work we've been doing. The dining area is on the roof, and the building has no elevator. I've been in a wheelchair for 11 years. When I brought this to my boss's attention, he said it wasn't his problem. FML

Today, I joined a work call feeling confident, until my chair slowly sank mid-meeting. I tried to discreetly readjust, but the chair hissed and dropped me two inches every few seconds until only my eyes were visible above the desk. FML

Today, I rushed onto the metro to get to work. I found there were no seats left and asked a perfectly healthy guy to let me sit in the handicap spot. He refused to because "being tired" was a handicap characteristic. I have one leg. FML

Him being right behind you makes you look a little dumb, yes, but otherwise it was an honest mistake and you weren't making fun or him or anything so I dont see why an apology and just going on with your day wouldn't fix everything here...

Don't worry about it OP, you didn't say anything offensive. There is absolutely nothing to be found offensive in you mistaking the exact functions of the desk in question. I'm sure the guy in the wheelchair didn't get upset over your remark in the slightest. Worst case scenario: you were slightly embarrassed about your (easy-to-make) mistake.
