I did that to my parents once when I was a child. We were up the street at the house of family friends and some point in the evening, I wandered back home without telling anyone and fell asleep behind the couch. Since this wasn't something I thought I really required assistance doing, I, being a child, didn't really consider that there might be another reason to tell the people responsible for my well being what I was planning on doing.
