wouldn't that make that place worse?
Take it as a compliment, I guess, I'd be pissed but there's always a better place that wants your skills!
I had a co-worker who said something like this to me after she was let go. The difference was she was fired because she talked down to everyone and thought she was too good to do her job. Once, we trained on a new software program, one girl was out sick. The co-worker claimed to understand it the best, but refused to show her anything. She'd say things like "Well I figured it out", thanks that helps... After she was let go, she claimed it was because "they" (her superiors) were jealous she would take their jobs and that no promotions were available for her.
Just tell them you're not looking for a promotion, try and keep that job, and the next one you find get out of there because you know now that you work harder than you should and deserve better pay.
Fired because over qualified? Take it as a positive point and apply to somewhere better. Though losing an existing job does suck.
