I agree! The fact it was 'random' according to op and at the end of the meal when talk of next dates etc normally comes up makes me wonder if he just came up with something extreme to try and make sure he didn't have to face that conversation and directly reject op. I've had friends who'd rather do something like this than be honest, it's not right, but it happens.
