i agree with others =- it does not ruin the project at all. either end it there, or photograph the spot for 4 months. both are legitimate. it shows the real world

Easy. Keep taking pictures of the severed stump exactly as if the tree was still there. It'll turn into some obscure art-hipster-esque reference to the futility and eventual decay of life.
keep on taking pictures and insist that it's there in spirit and in our hearts. alas, we shall miss our leafy friend
