what is a "pilot light"???

if the pilot light went out on your hot water tank, it would have taking longer than 5 minutes to cool down. if you don't believe me, fill a large pot, cover it, place on stove an bring to a boil. then remove from heat. wait five minutes and remove the lid. stick your hand in. is it still scalding hot or freezing cold? you pilot light was probably out way before you took your 25 minutes to start the shower. Sorry to hear you had back surgery, I can't even imagine the pain you must have been in and are still in. Get better soon.
