It's a way to learn their culture. While it may have been a surprise, her family might welcome you even more for being part of their custom.
It's awkward for sure, but like the first commenter said, just try their traditions out. It'll show you respect their culture, respect being a HUGE thing in Japan.

Yes it "cultural" but if OP isn't comfortable with it, then they shouldn't have to do it.
There may be the issue they don't think of it as strange though.

I think that it's a good sign if they want to do traditional things like that with you, it shows that they don't think of you as an outsider
