He's probably a chickensh*t who wasn't man enough to break up with you himself. So he had to get his friends for moral support. They probably wanted to be there to make sure he didn't back out. Do yourself a favor and don't ask him to explain or come back.
he was likely afraid of what she would do, and had good reason for wanting witnesses. as far as any of us know, she could have been abusive, manipulative, overbearingly controlling, any number of issues. there are rarely cases where the man gets the benefit of the doubt in court, and the jury will often sympathize with the woman, and rule the man guilty of any charges or the woman innocent, simply on her word. If there was any chance of things getting ugly, the man would want some way to protect himself. Of course, there is no way for me to know the whole story from this two sentence post, but I prefer to think of both sides of an altercation first, before putting anyone down or placing labels on them.
