why didnt you just call the guy?
i don't blame the OP for trying to fix it himself, or for being unfortunate enough to have caused a bunch of additional damage when the ladder fell. i DO blame him for not having someone else there to hold the ladder, because if he had, the ladder wouldn't have fallen. only an idiot climbs a ladder without someone below to steady it.
OP made it sound like the ladder fell as soon as he got off of it. if someone had been holding it and walked away because he was going to be up there for awhile, they should have taken the ladder down, and put it back up when he was ready to come down. it's simply unsafe to leave a ladder standing all by itself.
That's why there are professionals.
They have people to take care of that, instead of being cheap and doing an ok job, you shoulda got it done right.
