Today, I flew home to visit my parents. We haven't seen each other in two years, I've gotten a few tattoos done since, and I knew they wouldn't approve, so I bought whole new outfits that covered everything and looked professional. When I got there, the first thing my mom says to me is, "Is that a nose ring!?" FML

Today, I came home to tell my parents about my new nose job I got about a month ago. My mom always told me I should get one, so I didn't tell her right away to see if she would notice. I was home for about 20 minutes before she asked me, "So when are you getting that nose job?" FML

Today, I met my mother's deeply religious fiancé for the first time. His response upon seeing me was to look me square in the eye and say, "You'll need to take out that nose stud or I'm afraid you'll not be welcome in our home." FML

Today, I got my first tattoo. I felt good about it, until I told my mom, who was not happy. She responded by taking me out of her car insurance policy, family plan, and charging me for rent every month since I, "wanna be all grown up now.” FML

Today, I was adjusting my nose piercing from the inside. My mother saw and thought I was picking my nose, so she slapped my hand away, tearing my nose ring out in the process. FML

Today, my mom got drunk and started crying at my after-wedding party, after promising she'd behave herself. She thinks my husband is an awful person who'll drag me into a life of sin, all because he has a tattoo and an ear piercing. FML

Stuff judgemental family members. Parents or otherwise. My hair dresser once said to me (about her daughters inked) I carried and birthed her, I get a say about what's on her body. Uh, no, you don't. She's over 30! My Dad doesn't like mine but his opinion doesn't stop me.

it's not that tattoo that's the problem, it's what the tattoo is a symptom of. your parents likely wanted you to have a comfortable life with a respectable job. jobs that disallow tattoos usually require higher skill and are more secure. they were hoping that you would excel. body modifications are an attempt to define an image - whether to yourself or others. it could be they were hoping that personal development would be more central and that outward appearance would be less significant to you. as you get older, you'll realize how little image matters and the time and effort dedicated to it is ultimately wasted. it is your life - but by your username, i think you realize that they want the best for you, and hope for the best for you as well.
