Never do things to be nice. That is the bottom line. It always comes to bite you in the ass. People are too greedy now a days. Look out for yourself and your friends and family.
I don't know how it works in Australia, but I know in the US if you find a lost wallet you can just put it in a mailbox and it will be sent to the address on the driver's license... for next time...
http://www.fmylife.com/money/1852747 OP: I hate when people scam on others like that. If it had been any other person he would have never gotten the damn thing back.
If he does it won't matter. As it's been said, the person can't prove you stole anything.
http://www.fmylife.com/money/1852747 xD Some people are stupid enough to do it.
Why would he assume that the person returning his lost wallet to him has stolen his money? Seems unlikely. Then again, now that I think of it that would be the perfect defense: "Why would I steal his money then return his wallet to him?" But then again a thief probably wouldn't even bother and risk theft charges...but yeah he can't prove it and there's no way you'll get charged with anything.
This is why I stopped caring for the well-being of other people. When stuff of mine is lost or stolen, I never see the light of day of it again. And if I find something belonging to someone else, they're GOING to give me shit for it when I return it anyways!! The nicest thing I'd do it take the money from it and turn the wallet in to the cops for them to put up with. That's the NICEST thing I'd do. Second option is just throwing the wallet away or something.
...yeah, stealing the money from the wallet is really nice of you. :/ Seriously, wanna be nice without being bitched at? Find their house, put the wallet in the mailbox. Problem solved.

Uhg, I hate these kind of people, you try to help them out but then they have to go and be ass holes about it. FYL
I would tell him go ahead and file charges- he didn't SEE you take the money, which you didn't, and he can't prove it. End of story. This is why people don't do nice things anymore- cuz it bites them in the butt.
