Today, I went to a training class for a new job. While learning how to process cash, credit cards and checks at the registers, the trainer asked if everyone new what a personal check was. Most of them didn't. FML

I write one check a month, for my rent. I have no reason to write more and I have never paid at a store by check. Why would the teenagers you're training with need to know about checks?

It's not just me, it's most people. Credit/debit cards are significantly more convenient and secure and a lot of stores don't even take checks anymore. Checks are a dying payment method, for good reasons, have been for over a decade and most teenagers have no reason to have ever dealt with them. This is different than being able to do simple arithmetic.

Just because you don’t use checks regularly, doesn’t mean others don’t. This also runs along the lines do why should they know how to count if the register does it for them? Sadly, I’ve seen too many people who couldn’t figure out the change when something went wrong.
