Today, my dentist discovered that, at 21, I still had a baby tooth, and asked if I wanted it pulled. My mouth was already numb, so I said sure. Turns out the numbing wore off. The dentist pulled it anyway. FML

Hey y'all, op here. I submitted this while I was logged out, hence why it's not under my name. This actually happened a year ago, I'm 22 now. Thought I'd clear some stuff up. Yes, It hurt like hell. Yes,I screamed like a banshee. No. My dentist didn't notice I was in pain (how, I don't know, since his assistant literally had to hold me down to prevent me from ripping his hands out of my mouth). Yes, There was an adult tooth underneath, which they determined from x rays. Yes, I continue to see the dentist. He's actually a really good dentist and apologized profusely for this. I have a very healthy adult tooth now where the baby tooth used to be. I am, however, even more terrified of the dentist now than I was before.

Wait, was there an adult tooth even under it? I have two baby teeth and I'm 27. For whatever reason I never developed adult teeth underneath. So if the baby tooth is removed it leaves a gap (unless you have an overcrowded mouth), which can cause problems eating. You always want to keep the tooth as long as possible if it's healthy to avoid needing a bridge or implant. I hope there was an issue with the actual tooth and it wasn't removed needlessly!

It could cause problems later on. Like if it didn't fall out because it was stuck, the adult tooth below it could be lodged under it and cause irritation in the gums or even an infection.

Yearly x-rays would determine if there was an adult tooth underneath. I never received 4 of my adult teeth (same first molar on each side, top and bottom) they only came out if there was a problem. At 29 I have one left. We don't exactly have the whole story from OP.

I am 20 and still have one. However recent X-rays have shown that even if they remove it my adult tooth will never come up. And they would have to remove two others just to remove the baby. Baby tooth for life here

Dental isn't considered health care. You have to pay extra for dental coverage in Canada, just like the US. OP's problem stunk, but be sure to vocalize pain always! Dentists know that people sometimes mistake the tugging and pressure of pulling the tooth out as pain, so wincing is normal because it feels strange. ALWAYS let them know, NEVER feel as though you're burdening them. If they get upset, you find a new dentist!

I had 9 baby teeth removed though I never had the tooth buds underneath. One of those had a very long root that went into my sinus cavity. When they removed it, that fluid drained into my lungs, which collapsed. Then my heart stopped. Luckily, they had a defibrillator, adrenaline, and other lifesaving equipment there until they brought me around.
