Thanks, "Mom"

Today, I received a call from a collection agency. Since I had no clue, I was ready to file a police report for stolen identity. I then called my mom only to find out she has been opening new credit cards with my information for 3 years and not paying them. My credit is ruined and I'm only 21. FML

wow still call the cops or something i've heard of this happening before to 1 year olds who cant do anything about it thats terrible. your mom is evil!

Bring in the law! You can't just shrug it off because she's family.

File for identity theft anyway, it's it's not like the lawbooks say "none but your parents shall have the right to use your identity."

Clearly #8 (aka "polter"-"Geist") has no problem with this concept as they themselves are most likely to partake in such behaviors as the the mother! Dumbass!

I think you are right in a sense. Not everyone's family is functional like yours Geist, some people have problems with gamblers and alcoholics, some people just have shitty parents, others don't have a full family. Why do you get to make the Op feel shittier because it is obviously HIS fault his mother is a bitch.

This is an unfortunate circumstance. I definitely think you should take it to the law. I know that will be difficult because she is your mother, but you cannot allow your mother to destroy your life because she most likely has destroyed her life. At the same time, you need to talk to your mother and find out what she did with your money. She most likely has either a shopping or gambling addiction, and she probably needs some sort of professional help, which I'm sure the court will take into consideration while reviewing the case. This is a terrible situation, but you can try to make it a positive by looking at it as a way of helping your mother who obviously needs much help. After going to the police, call the credit bureaus and social security and have them put blocks on your credit/social security. It will prevent people from being able to open credit accounts without phone verification first.

Wow, Geist needs to look at your comment. It sounds like she is a problem case. She might even be into drugs. But all we know is what is written. The Op has had his life ****** up by his mother. How can people say he is in the wrong. He didn't know. Whatever is going on or happened, all we know is that this was done behind his back for three years and now he has to undo something his own mother did. DO people not have empathy on here. Sure they have it for the asshole in Hong Kong who deserved it. But because it is his mother he is obviously a horrible person. Is this like sexism or something--an ideal mother would never do this. Sorry people the 1950's was a lie. No one has a perfect mother. Op just has a thief for a mother.

My friend had this happen w/her dad too. Unfortunately, suing her really isn't going to do any good. The good news, is that it's a felony & she'll just go to jail instead.

Can anyone tell me how it is possible for her to use her adult son's credit for her own use? Here in Sweden this would be impossible without forging the signature on the application. And when the credit card companies make a check on the credit, they need to send a notification to him. And still, this could only be done once or twice since he will have too much debt to be able to get a new application approved. What is it with the US? Stone age?

Identity theft is a complicated and scary thing. I've heard of shopaholic families who will open credit cards using their newborn's information just so they can keep shopping and not have to pay it back. Instead, the kid will discover in about 18 years that his credit is ****** for the rest of his life. There are some people in this world that are just absolute monsters about that. So damned money/possession hungry that they don't care who's lives they ruin to get it.

I wonder that myself. My grandmother had a shopping addiction. She would just get credit cards and max them out. Companies kept sending her new ones. When she died my family got tons of calls. We refused to pay - it was thousands of dollars. We don't know why the companies were stupid enough to send cards to someone who obviously does not pay them back.

This is actually fairly common. It happened to a good friend of mine in college. All the parent needs is a social security number and a signature. They already know that information, and so they send in the application. They tend to do it when the kid is in college because the student still lists their parent's residence as their "home," so all the paperwork gets sent there. My friend Cassie went to study abroad in Australia for 6 months and came back to $8000 worth of debt, courtesy of her mother. It's a tough situation, maybe the parent has a gambling/shopping problem, and it's hard for the OP to charge their own mother. I know Cassie never did, but their relationship has never been the same since.

I can buy that you can open credit card accounts with a social security number and a forged signature once or twice, but over and over again means that there is a serious system fault. There can't be any checks for credibility along the way. Idiotic to say the least...

Okay, seriously, what is up with these ******-up parents taking their kid's money?

Report it to the police anyway. Your mom deserves it

A lot of parent use their kids name to keep the lights on and food in the frig The coos arent going to do anythhing but scold you for wasting thier time. Just file Bankruptcy and fugget bout it!!!! Your Mom made you sooooo....

REALLY?? First, the feds are not going to scold you for wasting time. It's a FEDERAL OFFENSE. Second, filing bankruptcy will only make his situation worse. He will likely not be able to get a house, an apartment, a car, a job. He's screwed, and all because his mother didn't have the decency to either deal with her needs legally, or get rid of whatever addiction she has. There are programs in place to help needy families keep the lights on and feed themselves. Just because his father screwed his mother 21 years ago does not make her a perfect, deserving, lawful woman. She is responsible for her actions.
