Today, my dad told me he was planning to have his steady girlfriend over for dinner. He's only had a few relationships since he and my mom split up when I was very young, so I was excited to meet the woman. He then told me that I knew her already. My dad is dating my aunt on my mothers side. FML

Today, I called my mom to let her know that my father, her ex-husband, suffered a series of mini strokes. Her reply was essentially, "Oh that sucks. Are you still taking your grandmother to lunch sometime this week?" Dad lives halfway across the country. FML

Today, my mother casually told me she’s been seeing someone for the past 3 months. My dad passed away 2 years ago. They were together for 40 years. Suddenly she had to get off the phone with me because her “guy she’s been talking to” was calling. Hence I’m on the wine. FML

I have a similar situation. Don’t judge. People are people. My dad has essentially been looking after my mom’s body for the past few years as there is nothing left of her due to dementia. He’s connected with an old girlfriend from over 50 years ago. He feels incredibly guilty about it, but now has someone to confide in. I don’t hold it against him. I cannot imagine how hard it must be to take care of the shell of the person you love, and feel totally alone. Give your dad some slack.
