Today, as I was taking a walk, I heard a cyclist and so I wanted to move to the other side of the sidewalk for them. It turns out that I walked directly in front of them instead. Nearly scared them to death. FML

Generally the person overtaking will/should indicate where they are. While walking my dog I will call out "On your left/right with a dog." so as not to surprise anyone.

Cyclists are supposed to call put which side they will be passing when coming up on pedestrians. Like “on your left” or whatnot. Did they not do that? Etiquette requires coordinated statements and actions to prevent injuries. In the usa, they are to treat shared paths like a street. Pass on the left, etc… and if it’s not a trail, they legally should be on streets as a vehicle and not sidewalks. Trails that are shared requires courtesy from all. Not that we see it though…
