Today, I took a exam in which I need to get a good score on to pass the class. I finished two minutes before the exam ended and as I was handing it to my teacher I realized I had used a pen instead of a #2 pencil. FML

Some tests that are administered in the US are on "Scantron" sheets. These sheets are numbered and have just "A" "B" "C" "D" bubbles on them (along with spaces for your name and date and things like that) but a quick google search confirmed my suspicion that the #2 pencil is what the machine reading the Scantron sheet used to detect so if you filled out a test with something else it's essentially like handing in a blank test. Reading further on "todayifoundout.com" with newer Scantron machine readers you can still use a pen and have the test read, #2 pencils are just preferred. Some teachers even hand grade Scantron sheets though I'm not sure about OPs situation.
