Ugh... I hate people like that. You are just trying to be friendly... they should just smile and nod. What is saying 'she died' going to do, except for make you feel bad! I used to get this occasionally when I made company calls. I am sorry but I had no way of knowing they died! It would be absurd of me to assume every one may have died since the last time they dealt with the company. They could at least be polite about it! Sorry OP!
I don't see what's bad about that... ok so she died, but she was obviously still "popular" because many people are sending condolences. that's a great thing, better than nobody sending something when you die. if it SOUNDED bad you could easily repeat it and make it sound respectful, "oh I'm so sorry... it looks like there were a lot of people that they mattered to..." and walk away!
