Hiccups happen - they're not voluntary. There's nothing you can do about it. I'm sure your friend was just grieving...some odd stage of it. I wouldn't take it to heart, though. Sorry about your friend's mum :(

You could have held your breath but your friend should realize you didn't intentionally hiccup heck my mom started hiccuping after my great grandmother her grandmother passed away in 2011 because she was sobbing so much
