Today, my landlord informed me that from now on, she'd prefer if I paid my rent in cash each month. Apparently, I "look sketchy" and she didn't "ever want to deal with the hassle of a bounced check." FML

Freaking stereotypes... Just because I'm in a wheelchair doesn't mean I'm retarded. Fuggin idiots. FYL, stereotypes oppress us all.

There's a stereotype that people in wheelchairs are retarded? I've never heard that one before. But I don't hang with idiots.

Good lord! Make sure you get receipts with her signature because in three months she'll pretend you never paid and take you to court!

Yep I was thinking the same thing. She's gonna claim you didn't give her anything. Have her sign/date the receipt, make sure it details the time period the money received was to cover and the address/unit number of the apartment. Heck, a fingerprint from her every month might not hurt. Geez what a hassle.

Sounds like your landlord is sketchy. GET RECEIPTS!

I wouldn't do it. Time to find a new place to live if she doesn't accept checks from you. Checks provide a paper trail that would hold up in civic court proving you paid your rent. With cash payments there are no such trails. Should there be a book keeping error (or just plain deviousness) on her part, she could claim you never paid it. Without a paper trail proving you did so, the judge would likely side with the land lady.

Two comments with the same idea in the time it took me to type that on my iPhone. I'm glad the FML community exhibits a collective wisdom and support now and then.

your landlord sounds "sketchy as hell" to me- asking you to pay in cash, theres no proof that you paid if you pay in cash, i would ask for a signed receipt every time if i were you, op

She doesn't want to run the checks through the bank. She wants cash so she can hide it from the government.

What's the problem with wanting to keep income from the government? Unless of course she is claiming benefits for being unemployed, then always give her a check.

landlord is probably not reporting the income on her taxes

Well, if you live up to the stereotype, it's easy to make money in cash. Do you know anything about chemistry, or growing plants?

If you "seem sketchy" to your landlord, why would she want you paying in cash?? I would think that she'd like having checks better because that way there's proof that you paid. It seems like she's the sketchy one... Probably time to find a new place to live OP. Good luck!

I would say no- how are you able to track if you've paid her or not. If there is a bounced cheque- tell her you'd be able and willing to talk to her about it then. Say there is nowhere in your contract that states how you have to pay, until shit hits the fan, you are paying how you want to pay.

Lol 31.. Do you go around looking for people to give legal advice to? You must be a paralegal or a law student. This is probably the 4th comment I've seen where you try to correct people on legal matters.

how can you correct anything without a copy of OP's lease. My old lease specifically allowed checks, except that if one was returned NSF aside from the fees, checks would no longer be accepted.

Hmmm sounds like she's trying to avoid taxes
