I think it's kinda cute, if it wasn't immediately obvious what it was. A moment of puzzlement, wear this, why? Then the realization, Oh my god is that an engagement ring? I guess he felt you were comfortable enough that an overly formal proposal was unneeded. Might've judged wrong, but still.
