Today, my neighbor showed me footage of my 7-year-old son spraying his beloved rose garden with weed killer. The whole garden is dead as fuck, and I'm now being taken to small claims court. FML

He's 7. He should know right from wrong and to stay out of other people's property. Rose gardens aren't cheap and the neighbor probably spent a lot of time on it. I'd be pissed too, 7 year old or not.

Well your 7 year old was able to find weed killer....and you left him alone long enough to not only find said weed killer, but then to go spray it all over your neighbors stuff. I'm gonna say this is your fault.

The fact that your 7 year old had access to a "weed killer" shows your lack of responsibility. I seriously doubt he had on the proper protective equipment to not hurt himself.

I'm sorry, OP, YDI for keeping weed killer where your son could get to it. I don't blame your neighbour for being pissed off! You should try and settle out of court and give your kid the punishment of helping the neighbour replant the whole thing so that he can learn how much hard work goes into these things and know better than to pull a stunt like that again.

I'm guessing this is the first you are hearing about it, so why would your neighbor jump to the conclusion that you need to be taken to court? Shouldn't the first step be trying to work out fair compensation and court only necessary when you refuse to pay? What an asshole.

Guessing here, but something tells me this isn't the first time...and if the parent's reaction to the neighbor is "he's only 7" without any compensation...**** that!! That's shitty parenting 101...if I were that neighbor...I'd probably be going to court as well.

Yes that's right, blame the parent... Every chemical or potentially harmful this is kept locked away from our daughter in this house. And magically she can still find a way to get a hold of something she can't have, or break the child locks, or try and climb the shelves to get to it. I watch her like a hawk, but I'm only human. Should I mention she's only 1? I don't even want to imagine what she'll be getting into when she's 7. This neighbour is just nothing but a dick, it's not the parents fault that the kid was just being a kid.

Of course I do. The kid did something wrong. And obviously at 7, doesn't have the means to repay the neighbour, so clearly, the parent is responsible for it financially. But people are commenting that this person was a bad parent because of the child's actions. Kids are quick to get into things, even if you leave them for a minute. That's just a kid thing. They get into trouble, that's often how they learn and grow from things. Rather than take the parent to court, the parent and the neighbour should work out a plan. Where the parent will take responsibility for their child's action and pay for the necessary items to replace the damage, and where the kid will help the neighbour replant the garden. That way, the child actually learns his lesson. I don't know how taking the parent to court who is innocent in all this, would teach the child who actually did the wrong doing, right from wrong.

Because people like to paint themselves as victims, I read the OP's post as though since the OP didn't take financial responsibility the neighbor took OP to court.
