It'll die in there x)
We didn't call animal control because we didn't want the squirrels trapped and killed. Use a broomstick to gently tap the wall closest to where you hear the scrambling. I guess we convinced them the house was haunted because in a few days, we suddenly had a new squirrel tribe in the trees. The cats loved chasing them. The scrambling stopped, hasn't appeared. And when we had some major HVAC work later that summer, no part of any squirrel corpses were found.
Just try to do whatever you can to get that squirrel out *safely*. Either that or stay awake at night, listening to it.
I had a similar problem, living in a basement apt, years ago. My cats kept going into the ceiling after them. One of my roommates got the bright idea to shoot one of them with an air rifle while I was at work. He had good aim too, because the squirrel caught the BB in the eye. It somehow managed to get into my room, and crawl behind one of my bookcases, before it died. My roommate didn't even tell me what happened, and I didn't find out until the apt was full of flies. FYL, OP :-/
