It sounds like you're not getting the whole story here. The teacher probably set up a debate where first everyone argues in favor of the conservative view and then everyone argues in favor of the liberal view, or vice versa. Almost all government/social science classes do that to force students to really look at the pros and cons of both sides.

I'd be like, "way 2 go Son! I'm proud of you!" Then, take him down to the local bar & brag to all the fellas about how my boy don't take no shit. Eventually, we'd get drunk & wind up in the bathroom w/a hooker to share between us...Much better than bonding by watching "Silent Hill."
