Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Today, after my housemate handed in his notice to vacate without telling me beforehand, I had few days whilst working to make a decision to stay or vacate. In a panic, I chose vacate. On my day off I sat down with my finances and discovered I can't afford elsewhere. I asked to stay, my landlord put up rent by 50%. I might now become homeless. FML

Well, what do your local housing laws require as minimum notification of an "end of lease" in a written rental contract? In the the US, each city has a local gov't housing dept. to help resolve landlord/ tenant issues. Else let 'em know to contact your new contract attorney instead. (Try the "bluff" first before contacting one - or do so yourself anyway for that free first consult to find out what your rights are.) Or are you unfortunately illegally subletting/ have only a verbal rental contract? Good luck!!!

Unless you're behind on rent or actively violating something in the lease, the standard requirement is 30 days notice in the US. And that assumes that your roommate owns the place. If they don't, they can't do shit to you.

They would need to file for eviction if you’re not out by that time, which would rake at least a week, but maybe up to a month. Research eviction laws in your area, but you should be fine.

Your roommate can't do that. Talk to an attorney. after telling you to vacate, if you dont leave they have to go through an eviction process. and unless your roommate is your landlord, they cant legally evict you anyway.

As a former landlord, and assuming you live in the U.S., your roommate cannot do that. It is illegal. You can trust me when I say this, getting somebody out of a rental unit if they pay the rent and don't want to go voluntarily, takes a hell of a lot longer than two weeks.
